The State and Republic of Singapore CoA

When Singapore gained internal self-governance from the British in 1959 (Control of all affairs except internal security and foreign affairs, Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State represented by the local equivalent of Governor General, the Yang Di-pertuan Negara), the government adopted new symbols for the up and coming nation, abandoning the old tower and lion for a new coat of arms.

It remained as the coat of arms of Singapore as the country went through merger with Malaysia and the subsequent ejection out of it, becoming the only 20th century forced into independence as a republic.

Fun fact: Majulah Singapura was the motto granted by the college of arms for the coat of arms of the Singapore municipal council, later on City Council and is also the title of their national anthem.

The story goes that when Zubir Said, a well known Malay film composer was commissioned by the City Council to compose a song for the reopening of Victoria Memorial Hall, he came around the place for inspiration and was struck by the light display of the words 'Majulah Singapura' outside the buliding and thus used it for the title and chorus for the Song
